Running on Empty Review + Vitamins

12 Jun

Not too long ago I received Running on Empty from Matt.

I finished it! Yay for reading books!

I have to say, it was definitely a lot different from what I expected. I have read several running books from Dean Karnazes to Pam Reed, but Running on Empty by Marshall Ulrich was raw. Karnazes’ running novels are simple and make you feel like he can run forever without any problems. Same with Pam Reed. She makes it seem like she just runs and runs without any challenges. For Ulrich, however, there is raw intensity when he runs.

In his book, he shows his struggles and all the bumps in the road he had to overcome to run across America. It seems like one problem after another with injuries (I feel ya) and his sidekick quitting. Ulrich also adds raw intensity when he reveals that he runs most likely because he is running away from his upsets like the death of his first wife and failed marriages. In addition, his book doesn’t seem to purely focus on running. No doubt it is a book about running, but something about it adds a whole new level. He’s honest and throws out a few curse words, which I love. (Hey, I’m Italian. I swear.) To put it in plain terms, Ulrich is a man who runs and still faces everyday challenges just like the rest of us runners. He doesn’t come across as a superman runner like Karnzes, but there is no question that he has superman qualities to never stop running across America. He seems more human and more of  runner like you and I.

“As for me, sure, there’s an underlying compulsion: survivor’s guilt and a need to punish myself, to prove myself, to face down my own mortality, to defy death. But my running is also a reflection of my upbringing, a work ethic, a personal challenge. My love of history gets interwoven, too – the feats of other people in other times – coupled with the alluring possibility that I might be able to go farther, faster, today.”
I highly recommend it if you love running or just reading. It’s summer after all. Go read a book.

———————————————————————————————

It seems like all I do right now is research foot pains. I know that the first time I hurt my foot, it had to be plantar fasciitis. Then, I did some more research and came across cuboid syndrome which is a subluxation or disruption of the cuboid bone which lies on the outside of the foot.

No matter what I have, I have been strength training. I’ve been working on strengthening my calves, quads, and glutes. When I get up in the morning, my foot hurts so I do some stretches. Currently, as in right this very moment, my foot feels fine. Like, I’m really surprised. Knock on wood.

In addition, to strength training, I bought iron. I had a little light-bulb in my head go off. This may be TMI, but whatever. I don’t get a period. A lot of athletes don’t either so don’t give me that shit that I’m too skinny. It’s not uncommon. Anyway, I don’t get a period so ding ding ding, maybe I am iron deficient. I think I hit it on the money. I told this to my mom and she agrees. We went to Target and bought some iron vitamins.

Everyday, nonetheless, I do take vitamins.

I take:

  •  Vitamin D to support my teeth, bone and immune health.
  • Calcium magnesium zinc to help build strong bones and teeth as well as reduce the risk of osteoporosis and  support healthy muscle contraction.
  • B-complex to help convert food into energy, maintain nervous system health, and help red blood cell and protein formation.
Perhaps taking Iron will help my injury heal faster. I will do anything at this point. You guys would too since I bet you’re sick of hearing about it.
Now on to honorable eats:
Greek yogurt + protein powder + grapes + Nugo bar in a jar
Fish and falafel
Lemon coconut cake
Tofu
Ever heard of cuboid syndrome?
Do you take vitamins?
Read any good books lately?

I’ve never heard of that syndrome, but whatever is wrong with your foot..i hope you feel better ASAP!!

Oooh so much going on in this post. I love it.
    1. That book sounds awesome. I love that it’s more realistic. I haven’t read many running books though to tell you the truth.
    2. I’ve never heard of cuboid syndrome, but whenever I’m injured I’m scouring the internet relentlessly for answers.
    3. I don’t get a period either. I actually stopped getting mine before I was a runner and I was at a higher weight. It’s a mystery.
    4. I love that you put a bar in a peanut butter jar. I’m stealing that idea.

About the whole period thing, same here. I got it on and off when I only did kickboxing and I was in the 130’s.

    Great review of the book!
I take the same vits as you- as well as Joint Care glucosamine plus omega 3. Good luck with the iron- I had MAJOR stomach issues with it( I don’t want to be too graphic but let’s just say the opposite of constipated-hope that wasn’t TMI), so my doc gave me a different dose of iron. I don’t get a period either , I worry for the future of my bones:(
I reeeeaaly want some Dark chocolate dreams- can’t get it where I live, Hhmph!
    Xxx

Female athlete triad. Yes, it may be common for runners to not get a period but by no means does that make it okay. You are putting your health at a major risk, no good!

    • seegirlsmile June 15, 2011 at 5:13 PM #

      I agree.

Missing your period for a prolonged time puts you at risk for reproductive difficulties, etc. A lot of medical problems can be your future.

I’m not a runner anymore (nor do i exercise anymore cuz of poor health), but I am a healthcare practitioner and I know a lack of period is a problem.

Athletes tend to rub it off as “no biggie” (I know…I did too when I was a competitive athlete and hardcore). But , it is not “no biggie”. Kara Goucher gets her period.

Just hope u remember to get regular check-ins etc….and i do agree also that not only athletes have this problem (some couch potatoes can have it too…still a problem regardless).

    Loved that book!

I remember cuboid syndrome from A&PI!! I always thought it sounded funny…like the patient would turn into a cube or something 😉 haha I’m a weirdo!

Glad you take iron pills too. I take them along with calcium and vitamin D and have really noticed a big change in my running, so hopefully you will too. 🙂

Good! That makes me feel so much better.

You’ve sparked my interest in this book. I think I might add it to the summer list of books to read!

I just read The Help (can’t remember author right now) and I’m currently reading The Host by Stephanie Meyer (Twilight saga author). I’m really loving The Host, just picked it up Friday from the library and got into it right away.

I’ve never heard of cuboid syndrome. I hope you can figure out what’s going on with you body, your foot specifically. Could you go in some where to have it looked at and officially diagnoised?

    • lifttorun June 13, 2011 at 7:39 AM #

I just bought The Help. I’m going to start reading it after I finish my third Chelsea Handler book. I also read The Host. I liked it actually. It’s better than Twilight.

If I could see a doctor, I would. First off, my mom won’t take me and she says if I want to see someone, I have to pay for it. I did just e-mail my cross country coach. Maybe she can help.

I actually requested that book at the library a while back. Still waiting on whoever has it to send it back so I can get it!
I take a daily vitamin but that’s it.
I used to have to a vitamin C because my doc said I was at risk of getting scurvy. Wtf? I thought only pirates got that 😛 But no worries i’m not at risk of that any more lol.

That book looks so good! I’m going to have to read it!

I’ve never heard of cuboid syndrome, but I always research on the internet whenever I think something is wrong with me!

I didn’t have a period for a while either. I lost it when I was around 125 my sophomore year (I was losing weight..and I’m around 5’5 1/2 to 5’6 so it’s certainly not underweight!) and that wasn’t even my lowest weight. I didn’t get it back until this track season (so it was gone for over a year), since my mileage was reduced and I began to get into a nasty binge cycle. I’m not saying that gaining weight is the answer though, so don’t worry about it! Talk to a doctor, though. Sometimes it has to do with the stuff you eat (I’m not saying you don’t eat enough, though). You certainly eat healthy! 🙂 I take iron pills now too, since I was anemic this track season, and it certainly doesn’t hurt! Good luck! I know you’ll get this figured out! 🙂

I can totally relate. Like a year and a half ago, I wasn’t even at my lowest weight and I didn’t get a period. I was only doing kickboxing too.

Great book recommendation. I hadn’t heard of this, so it’s really good you reviewed it. That quote is hardcore! I agree: raw definitely seems to be the word.

Good going on the strength training too. Patience is a skill that you really learn overcoming injury. But then it’s with you for life, and you can use it with all sortsa shit, it’s great!

  12. Michelle June 13, 2011 at 8:31 PM #

I actually won the book Running on Empty too and have been reading it this past week. I agree that it is more “raw” than other ultramarathoner books I’ve read. It is definitely a good read so far!

  13. Errign June 14, 2011 at 1:47 PM #

The only vitamin I take consistent is a women’s multi vitamin – nada special 🙂 Good luck with your injury, that must be very frustrating.

  14. Sweet Cheeks June 14, 2011 at 5:19 PM #

The Host is better than Twilight?!? I must read this! Thanks for the rec!

I was put on birth control a few years ago after losing my period. I was (am still am) very active and was training for races, etc…it’s not necessarily a bad thing as long as you get things sorted out with your doc. That’s what I did because I definitely wasn’t going to give up my fitness…i love it too much!

    • lifttorun June 14, 2011 at 6:14 PM #

Most books are better than Twilight. Hahha. I don’t know if you’re a fan of Twilight or not, but anything is better.

  15. moveovercelery June 14, 2011 at 6:27 PM #

I don’t get a period either…? I haven’t had one for a few months now and it hasn’t really bothered me until now. But I have to see the gyno for the first time in a few weeks. Barf!

  16. bakebooks June 14, 2011 at 7:51 PM #

Great review. I’ve heard about the book. It seems sad, but oh so true the part about running away from our struggles and pain. I believe that’s what a lot of runners do actually…but interesting too. For me, now when I get upset or anxious – I can’t run – it makes me worse. I don’t know why – never used to be like it years ago when I actually ran well. Now…my mind shuts down my body.

  17. Jamie June 16, 2011 at 5:51 PM #

not getting your period IS abnormal. if you’re fine with it then I guess that’s fine. but it means that your bones are depleting and you might not beable to have kids in the future if you keep it up.

but then again, you’re “fit” right?
