Stronger, Faster, Quicker

26 Jun

I made myself wake up before six AM this morning to get in an hour run before work (weight lifting followed after work). Going on the run wasn’t the hard part. It was so beautiful out. The birds were chirping, the sun was out, and it was just generally peaceful. I was really enjoying my surroundings.

I guess I was enjoying them too much.

I’m not fishing for compliments here or any ‘woe is me’ comments. This might as well be considered a jog.

I want to go back to these days

I know, I know. After coming back to running after not running for days, weeks, and months in a row, I shouldn’t be too concerned. I am though. I’m allowed to be.

Perhaps I should lay off the bread pudding. Yeah, it’s like the size of Shaq’s fist.

Whatever, whatever.

If my first Foot Traffic Flat half marathon isn’t amazing, then I always have

…the Wildwood Trail Run race. I signed up for another trail run. This time it is a half marathon. It’s July 30th and I finally signed up because I requested a discount for being ‘youth’. I got seven bucks off! Holla.

I think my double digit run tomorrow after work with my friend will be great practice.

Speaking of work, my boss has me working morning shifts all next week. I am pretty positive that I told him I cannot work mornings before I even got the job. I don’t know how to confront him since it’s my first job and I just started it. Any ideas?

Recap of this week workout wise:

Monday: Ran 5.46 miles in 38 minutes + a random cardio/weight/Plyometric based class at my gym (~48 minutes) + 20 minute trail run
Tuesday: Ran ?? miles in 45 minutes or so followed by the elliptical.
Wednesday: Ran 7.19 miles in 52 minutes followed by the elliptical and water aerobics
Thursday: Ran 8.81 miles in one hour followed by the elliptical
Friday: Ran 8.61 miles in 1:01 then did some weights and the elliptical
Saturday:  1 hour spin class followed by the elliptical
Sunday: Ran 8.49 miles in 1:02 + 50 minutes of weights

Total mileage:  Approximately 45ish. I just forgot my Garmin on Tuesday. Well, I had it, but I forgot to press start after I stopped.

Thanks, Justin.

I have not done honorable eats in awhile. What’s wrong with me? It’s tradition.

Honorable eats:

Crab cakes + noodles + mushrooms + yellow squash
Indian salad
Tomato + goat cheese galette  w/ Brussels sprouts x 1981651
Strawberry Napoleon

Questions for you:

How do you gain running speed?
What’s your favorite dessert? Bread pudding. Hands down. I learned how to make it at my job today.

don’t worry girl, you’ll get there! It’s always so hard to get back to speed when you’ve had to take a break from running for awhile. (I’m still so impressed by that 14 miler though!) but oohhh my god, I’ve eaten so much ben and jerrys lately; great choice, I LOVE that stuff! Ps-have you tried red velvet cake or fair goodness sake yet? omg they’re AMAZING! and fave dessert is definitely chocolate mousse parfait with brownies and whipped cream..yummza!!!

    • lifttorun June 26, 2011 at 6:37 PM #

I have Red Velvet in my freezer right now. (: I love it so much. I need to try all the flavors.

    • lifttorun June 26, 2011 at 6:36 PM #

It’s the best! Go get some now.

    • lifttorun June 26, 2011 at 6:36 PM #

I don’t know how I got up before six even considering the night before I didn’t get to bed until 11 ish. Crazzzy.

AHAHAHA Bread Pudding Picture just made my life. Love it. Can you believe I’ve never tried it? Since you now know how to make it we can have a bread pudding fiesta.

You’re speed will get back to where it was. I feel like after I was injured (last season) I was running slow for a while and then all of a something snapped and I was back to normal. It takes a while and is so frustrating, but you’ll get there. Your pace is still kind of crazy fast sooo yah.

Fun post :D. My favorite dessert is probably ice cream – and lately it’s been in the form of DQ blizzards. So stinkin’ good. Banana cream pie with Reese’s PB cups? Yes, please.

To gain speed in running I do speed drills, not really formally either. Just when I’m on a run, I sprint every few minutes to pick up my heart rate.

Another good way I’ve gained speed in the past is to do spin class. It works your leg muscles so well!!

    • lifttorun June 26, 2011 at 7:31 PM #

Don’t even get me started on DQ Blizzards. I love, love, love those things.

  6. trailroadcrosscountrytrackrunner June 26, 2011 at 7:07 PM #

I totally understand how frustrating that is! I used to run at a sub-7 minute/mile pace for my double digit runs as well, but I am nowhere near that now! I know you’ll bounce back, though. It may be frustrating, but you’ll get there!

Nice weekly mileage! I ran 41 this week, and I’m aiming for 45 next week. I’m really hoping to build up to 60 this summer.

I must say, that Indian salad looks very interesting…I really like the color!

Good luck on your long run tomorrow!

  7. Jess June 26, 2011 at 7:41 PM #

Mmmm, that ben and jerry’s looks SO good!!

You WILL get back to those splits/times..but even though you may feel “slow” right now, you’re still faster than…everyone else. Bahaha!

  8. Allie June 27, 2011 at 3:58 AM #

You will get your speed back it just takes time 🙂
my favorite dessert is carrot cake!

  9. Hollie @ Lolzthatswim(andRun) June 27, 2011 at 5:00 AM #

Oh my god. Finally someone who loves bread pudding as much as I do. Girl you will get your speed back. When I fractured my heels, it took time but I’,m back to where I was before I did it! 🙂

  10. sarah June 27, 2011 at 5:56 AM #

Baha, that justin Beiber thing is too funny- your blog always cracks me up.
I have never had bread pudding, iv actually never seen it- but it looks good!
    Xxx

  11. ihearteggs June 27, 2011 at 8:28 AM #

I never really intentionally tried to gain running speed but last year when I was doing ALOT of intervals and sprints I got oddly fast (for me!)

… fav dessert, right now I”d like a cookie and icecream.. yum

  12. Molly June 27, 2011 at 9:31 AM #

I don’t really like speedwork but I know I have to do it to get faster! Sometimes I worry about logging too many miles and I actually get slower. I hit the track and do 10x400m or 5x800m intervals. If I don’t want to run on the track, I do mile repeats on the road or a 3-5 mile tempo run. It helps a lot because my heart rate sky rockets!

  13. Sweet Cheeks June 27, 2011 at 11:51 AM #

wow girl, you are seriously so impressive. know you have certain standards for yourself (which is great!) but I am blown away by your running…you rock! Don’t worry, you will get back to your SUPER speedy self in no time!

  14. J June 27, 2011 at 3:34 PM #

you are going to be kicking yourself for not getting adequate nutrition or taking a rest day when you get older. you are such an awesome runner, it is so sad to see you abuse yourself- it may not feel like it but down the road it’s going to be bad. hope for the best, maybe one day you’ll see the light and take a rest day like true elite athletes do.

    • lifttorun June 27, 2011 at 4:19 PM #

A rest day? I do take them when I need them and I feel like I need one. Some weeks I don’t need them.

      • runningperspective June 30, 2011 at 11:48 AM #

true runners listen to their bodies….keep taking those rest days when you need them. thats how it works best. everyone is differenttt!

      • lifttorun June 30, 2011 at 1:25 PM #

        Of course. (:

  15. mary June 27, 2011 at 6:08 PM #

I love your blog so much but I feel like you exercise waaaay too much. I just looked at your schedule this week and you did 8 mile runs plus elliptical! I personally could never do that and I feel like you may be addicted to it. Honestly, I feel like an awful person for saying all of this but it really does worry me to see someone so young, exercising for hours and hours everyday. Some days, yes, I work out for 60 min but then the next day I always take it easy…I don’t live in your body so I can’t judge how you feel but it seems like overkill doing an hour of running (fast paced) and then doing weights and more cardio.

    • lifttorun June 27, 2011 at 7:57 PM #

I don’t exercise for hours and hours. I know when to take it easy and I do. Who said I am killing on the elliptical anyway? For all you know, I could be going at snails pace.

  16. pumpedforpumpkin June 28, 2011 at 6:31 AM #

45 miles!? You’re a monster that’s awesome! Some days it’s okay to just enjoy the birds 🙂 and yes you’re totally allowed to feel concerned! I believe you’ll be back to your normal in no time. You’re already on the right track. and holy flying pigs that bread pudding looks AMAZING.
My favorite dessert would be pumpkin pie 🙂

  17. http://girlswithastethoscope.blogspot.com June 28, 2011 at 6:35 AM #

Hey girl! Just stumbled upon your blog and I absolutely LOVE it. As a runner, it’s great to see someone else be so passionate about it!! Just ran my first 1/2 marathon and it was amazing. Good luck on yours coming up! 🙂

    xoxo

  18. Sarah June 28, 2011 at 7:41 AM #

    Lemon cake 🙂

Gaining speed isn’t my biggest concern, I’m more of a power girl. I run with weights, for fun 😉 My mile is about a 9 and I’m so happy with that! Will it be an 8 or even a 7 some day, maybe, that’d be nice but I honestly don’t care all that much! This is coming from a “non-runner” though.

  19. juliegolean June 28, 2011 at 4:45 PM #

wowzas girl! thats a buttload of running!! my favorite dessert is forrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sureeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee italian cookies like rainbow cookies or cannolis!

    Where are you working?

    • lifttorun June 28, 2011 at 5:27 PM #

Zupan’s. It’s like a Whole Foods except smaller and more local.

  21. Jamie June 28, 2011 at 5:30 PM #

I know many others seemed to express the same sentiments but it’s truly hard to read your blog seeing how much you excercise. even though you feel good/strong right now years in the future logging that much excercise/mileage each day will take a toll on your body/joints. if you really want to be 45 year old that excercises for at least 2 hours a day every day then so be it.. but also realize hthat you’re spending 1/12 of the precious life you could be enjoying with others.. running.. in circles.

  22. Cassie May 1, 2012 at 7:45 AM #

You do whatever makes you happy! You are adorable and passionate. Live the life YOU want to live. There are worse things you could be doing with your life than the things you are doing now. I love your blog 🙂
