Don’t Even Get Me Started

20 Apr

It’s no surprise that I love magazines.

I have subscriptions to Runner’s World, Women’s Health, Fitness, Health, and Shape. Then, occasionally I buy Self and Oxygen. Sounds like a waste of money, yeah? Maybe, but I don’t care.

I recently picked up the newest issue of Self Magazine since Gwyneth Paltrow was on the cover with smokin’ abs.

I mostly love every article in Self, yet lately their ‘meal plans’ have been irritating me. Their idea of a snack is an apple – no problem there – and four almonds. Four almonds? If you go over, you had better get your fat ass on the treadmill. Lunch was a peanut butter sandwich with (yes count ’em) ten baby carrots. I guess I just find it silly to put such a limit like that on carrots or something healthy like a vegetable when I eat a pile of brussels sprouts with my two fish fillets, corn, and rice. I know these magazines are for women who generally want to drop a few pounds, but eating over ten carrots isn’t going to make you gain weight.

People at my school are normally alarmed at how much I eat. Half of them think I don’t eat actually so I’m lying, yet they are shocked that I can put away so much food. Women can eat over the range of 1200 – 1500 calories? With exercise, I can easily eat more than that. Even on days I take it ‘easy’ (let’s face it, I don’t do that), I can eat. I eat dessert every night if I want it. Ice cream is my food staple. According to these ‘fitness’ magazines though, I should be wider than a school bus. I suppose I am just breaking the rules of how women should eat and exercise. Don’t even get me started on women getting ‘toned’ and lifting weights.

Yesterday I ran. Yes! Today I ran. Woohoo! I only ran for ten minutes today and it was on the oh so fun treadmill and without shoes. I ran in my socks. I realized that I am a huge heel striker on my right foot, which is my injured foot. I hope to change that when I get some Vibrams over the weekend, hopefully. My fingers are crossed. Just to clarify, my whole foot isn’t injured. I only get pain in my big toe or on the left side of my right foot. I have started icing again and soaking my foot in Epsom salt. Supposedly Epsom salt will reduce the swelling of sprains and bruises. Maybe it’s helping. I don’t know. Maybe I should do some foot stretches though to make my foot stronger…? Any tips?

I am torn between getting a pair of Vibrams or these: http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/Product.mvc.aspx/22877W/0/Womens/Barefoot-Pace-Glove?dimensions=0

I still think I am going to go with the Vibrams.

Now onto to some honorable eats:

White bean spinach salad with onions and an egg

This was Heaven

P.S.

I got my braces off yesterday! I would show a picture, but I’m going to wait until I don’t look like a lazy bum realizing that they have this thing called makeup and jeans.

Do any fitness magazines irritate you with their health tips and articles?

Who else hates the evil treadmill?
I just want to run outside forever and ever and ever. Damn foot. FYI, I ran outside yesterday and the hard surface bothered my foot.

Yay for running!!!! I’m so happy for you 🙂

Alsooo I’m soooo obsessed with magazines too- guilty pleasures for sure. I typically hate all the weight loss articles too- also I think it was in that self one where they had these artciles on girls that lost 5 and 7 pounds…I dont mean to sound rude but um thats pretty much just water weight they lost….. HAVE MORE INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE!

I love fitness mags too! But they definitely make me feel like a pig. I’m a bottomless pit and their recommended portion sizes are so unforgiving.

    Love that quote. 🙂

Please take lots of pictures of you and your braces free smile. I made sure the world knew I got them off and I had them on all of 10 months ha.

I hate how the magical number is 1200 calories and most girls think they need to eat 1000 calories to lose weight. What the f?!! I would be so grumpy all the time. I agree with the whole “toned” thing. Say it’s for building muscle!!! Women need to start lifting and not being afraid of gaining some damn muscle. My friend recently told me she wanted to get rid of her love handles but didn’t want to do weight training because she didn’t want to be as muscular as me. Wtf!!!

Telling someone they can only have 4 almonds is ridiculous. I feel like that would just promote eating more almonds anyway, so just say none or an amount that actually satisfies!
Congrats on the run! I want vibrams for my birthday. Can’t wait to see a picture of you without braces!

UGH That is SO ANNOYING!! 10 carrots?? can u rly put a limit on them?!? ridiculous- it gets woman to be obsessive about numbers..which is not a good habit to get into to!
YES i hate treadmill UNLESS im doing hill or interval runs!

  9. sarah April 21, 2011 at 6:15 AM #

Yes, I LOVE Health/fitness magazines! Although all the diet plans used to make me feel like a greedy eating monster- now I let it roll off my back- yay for a raging metabolism!

I love this post and your thoughts! I recently got that mag in the mail but havent cracked it open. They really said four almonds?! I mean, couldn’t they just say “handful”?!

Maple Almond Butter?! YUM 🙂 I love Justin’s Dark Choc. Almond Butter 🙂
So glad you were able to run and I agree about magazines… they are crazy crazy crazy.

HAHA 4 almonds and 10 baby carrots?! Crazy!! That is why I DON’T buy fitness mags- they are WAY too annoying!! 😛

SO happy you got to run, and SO jealous of you getting Vibrams!! I’d LOVE to get a pair someday!

Omg do not get me started on those “meal plans” in health magazines. SO RIDICULOUS. Five carrots with one tablespoon of hummus is usually their idea of a snack and I honestly don’t know who would get full off that!

  14. Michelle April 22, 2011 at 5:15 PM #

    Yeah for running!!

I can definitely still put away more calories than the fitness magazines say, but I also know I have a pretty decent metabolism (and I’m assuming you do as well), and I exercise a lot. So that range of calories might be appropriate for someone who sits all day at work, only does light (or no) cardio, and has a metabolism that is slower. With that said, I do think 4 almonds is a little absurd and stopping at 10 carrots.

  15. Olivia April 23, 2011 at 10:31 AM #

I’ve never seen those little cottage cheese containers…damn it looks awesome! congrats getting your braces off, oh and i def. know what you mean; some people at my school easily mistake me for anorexic until they see me chow down like a madwoman at literally every meal and snack! haha love the fast metabolism:)

  16. Matt @ The Athlete's Plate April 23, 2011 at 4:38 PM #

I am def a treadmill hater!

  17. Katelyn April 24, 2011 at 10:45 AM #

WOOO girl I am so glad you got back to running!! I agree 110%, when I look at those “meal plans” I think to myself are you KIDDING me? Most people don’t believe how much food I eat, if I ever went on a meal plan with less than 2000 cals I don’t know what I would do wiht myself. I would probably eat my desk chair and my Droid too. I am always so scared to try socks on a treadmill, but if I do well in my half marathon next weekend I am rewarding myself with a new pair of shoes:)
